Fish and seafood as healthy food enjoys a high level of trust of the consumers. This is represented in the considerable increase in fish consumption worldwide amounting to more than 20 kg per inhabitant (source: Fish Information Center, Germany).
Nevertheless, fisheries and the fish processing industry are facing a multitude of challenges: fierce price competition, the weakness of the euro against the US dollar, as well as subsequent costs of the compliance with legal regulations of the common fisheries policy and of the EU food legislation.
