Fisch industry

Good sales prospects

under high economic and regulatory pressure

Fish and seafood as healthy food enjoys a high level of trust of the consumers. This is represented in the considerable increase in fish consumption worldwide amounting to more than 20 kg per inhabitant (source: Fish Information Center, Germany).

Nevertheless, fisheries and the fish processing industry are facing a multitude of challenges: fierce price competition, the weakness of the euro against the US dollar, as well as subsequent costs of the compliance with legal regulations of the common fisheries policy and of the EU food legislation.

It is imperative to eliminate corrosive and harmful gases at source

Contaminated air results from handling and storage of waste products of fish processing, especially ammonia gas (NH3) and hydrogen sulphide (H2S). These volatile substances are not only unpleasant because of their smell, they are also highly aggressive and toxic. Metallic plant components along the whole process chain (e.g. piping, actuators) can be severely affected in a short period of time.

If those hazardous gases are not completely extracted at source, useful life and value retention of the systems are at risk. Plant availability will be impaired by breakdowns and unplanned maintenance. Maintenance costs may exceed significantly the investment in waste gas treatment systems.

Environment protection and cost savings

Bespoke waste gas treatment systems from Likusta improve availability, value preservation and help making maintenance costs more predictable.

Likusta Umwelttechnik GmbH has over 40 years of experience in waste gas treatment in various industries. Using modern waste gas treatment plants, hazardous gas can be extracted before corrosion can occur.

For our customers in fisheries and in the fish processing industry, highly contaminated volume flows are treated in a two-stage process: in the first stage, polluted air is moved through a gas washer or a bio-trickling filter. Subsequently, it is treated in a bio-filter or in an activated carbon filter.

The technical process selected depends on various determinants and is designed in close corporation with our customers.

First treatment stage:

Water soluble substances are removed out of the waste gas by physical and chemical means. To that end, the polluted gas is brought into contact with a liquid stream. Waste products in solid, liquid or gaseous form are thereby dissolved in the liquid.

In Likusta bio-trickling filter, micro-organisms are used to remove emission components from waste gas streams. Instead of the organic packing material used in conventional bio-filter processes, inert plastic materials are used as substrate in bio-trickling filters. Due to their compact size, gas washers are ideal in confined spaces, while bio-trickling filter’s main advantage is low running costs.

Second treatment stage:

In the second treatment stage, the metabolic activity of micro-organisms in biofilters is used. Bacterial flora grows on an organic carrier material. If the installation area is sufficiently sized, biofilters are the optimal solution in temperate climate zones.

Likusta activated carbon filters make use of the porous structure and large surface area of activated carbon to eliminate harmful or odorous substances. 99% of those substances can be removed. Likusta activated carbon filters boast a very small installation footprint.
